Make your own cheat sheets!

Making a cheat sheet is not very difficult, it just takes a bit of time. Here's a breakdown of how I created the 3 grids that are included in the Design Sketching Cheat-pack.

Step 1

To produce the grids I first collected a lot of images of simple routers. I choose this product, because of its rectangular design with clean and straight edges.

This would help me easily find the vanishing points.

Step 2

I made sure to select three images that have a communicative and/or persuasive perspective and that they show the product in different points of view.

Step 3

For each image I created a file in Photoshop to locate the three vanishing points by extending the visible edges.

Starting from the three vanishing points I then added a series of grid lines overlapping the product.

Step 4

To help you position your sketch on the grid I placed a big circle on top of each of the routers.

By keeping your sketch more or less framed inside the circle you make sure the proportions look realistic.

The further you sketch outside of these circles the more distortion you will see occurring in the angles and proportions.

I also indicated the horizon line in the first two grids to help you see the position of the product in space.

Step 5

Print your personal cheat sheet on A4 (letter) for use as an underlay. I recommend using marker paper on top to make sure the grid is nicely visible.

That's it!

You are all set to create your own stunning perspectives!
