In contrast to what you might think, visualising ideas is not what sketching is all about. Its true superpower lies in the ability to think visually and gain insights!

To me sketching feels like thinking with my hands.*

Yet most sketching classes in design education seem to miss this entirely. They focus solely on drawing techniques to visualise preconceived ideas, leaving students unable to use sketching as an exploratory tool for discovery.

To learn how to think with your hands requires a different approach.

Looking back at 25+ years of teaching design sketching, I feel I have always had a different approach teaching these skills, but I also remember that it hasn’t always been easy. My ideas often collided with common conventions in design education and at times I have been close to quitting my teaching jobs altogether.

The reason I kept going is that my students seemed to benefit greatly from my methods. I noticed how they quickly lost their fear of sketching and how they were able to develop and communicate their ideas much faster with confidence and control.

What’s my secret sauce?

Truth is, it’s not secret at all! I have just never taken the time to properly articulate my approach and share it publicly. Until now.

The Design Sketching Triad

Introducing the Design Sketching Triad™—a holistic framework that unlocks creative superpowers, by purposely training and carefully layering its core components. Align your Mind, Hand, and Eye to form a powerful creative engine that drives your entire design process.

  • Mind: The driving force that sets the intent and interprets the results.

  • Hand: The foundation of flow, turning abstract thoughts into visual explorations.

  • Eye: The critical filter that understands proportion, perspective, and structure.

This new framework has offered me a perfect lens to review all content from many years of teaching classes and building courses, and reorganise it in an even more meaningful and effective way.

The result is “the Complete Learning Journey for Design Sketching”—a professional training program in three phases wherein you will learn to control your mind, train your hand, and master your eye.

This learning journey isn't about making "pretty drawings”. It’s about confidence and professional efficiency. We focus on the skills needed to ideate at the speed of thought and communicate your concepts without wasting time.

Does that sound like skills you could benefit from as well? Check out the complete journey here!

*The Science of "Thinking with Your Hands"

It might sound counterintuitive, but this process is backed by a robust field of science: Embodied Cognition.

It proves that our thinking isn't just an internal brain function; it is rooted in our physical interaction with the world. When we sketch, we engage in "epistemic action"—using movement to simplify complex problems. The paper becomes an external buffer for your working memory, allowing you to "see" your thoughts unfold in real-time.
